New Writing Group Launches

You’ve done the research, found your ancestors, and discovered their stories. How are you sharing those stories and preserving your work for the future?

We are excited to announce a new writing group that will meet in-person on the second Saturday of each month at the library from 1:00-2:30, beginning March 16th. Anyone who is interested in writing about their family history is welcome to join us. Each session will have a short presentation from the organizer, followed by sharing of works in progress by participants.

For the kick-off, a dozen participants gathered at the Vermont genealogy library in Essex Junction on February 24th for a free workshop called Writing Their Stories.  Ann Whitman, a professional writer and editor, spent the first half of the two-hour session talking about defining goals and purpose, story development, finding details and adding context, and sharing writing tips and examples.

In the second half, we began developing our own stories and started to write. A few people shared their ideas with the group and everyone was intrigued to hear more as those story lines develop. Many in the group expressed an interest in having an on-going writing group for support and motivation.

We anticipate that some of stories we write will appear as content in our publications. But, whether you plan to publish your family history stories or simply distribute them at a family reunion, give them as gifts, or leave them for future generations, we hope you will join us.
